INTERNSHIPS are undoubtedly the best  way into this exciting career-path, where the more experience you have, the better your chances of landing that dream job. Summer work experience, whether paid or unpaid (expect unpaid in the beginning - you have to work your way up!) is one such way to go about it, and offers the opportunity to dabble in different areas whilst getting some inside knowledge on the way the professionals work. But, you've got to get your foot in the door quick, sharpish as opportunities in this area get snapped up quicker than tickets to Wednesday night's Crisis!

SO! Get your CV sorted, (with that all-important Fashion Soc. membership logged) an impressive covering letter, and some stong-willed, fashionable attitude, and GET APPLYING!!!

Central Saint Martins

                    

Central Saint Martins is world renowned for its Fashion pedigree with the likes of Stella McCartney, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen as just a taste of its many high-profile graduates. From short courses and graduate diplomas to Masters degrees and Postgraduate certificates, Saint Martins students ‘set the agendas by which we shape our lives’. The prestigious university also offers some of the strongest and most versatile courses in Fine Art, Acting, Industrial Design, Textiles, Ceramics and Communications.

Open Days: Open days take place throughout the year, deoending on course and level. Most centre around the January/February period, and are available by booking through the university.

Entry Requirements: The requirements for entry vary according to the course type and level; all postgraduate courses require an honours degree, and professional experience in a relevant area. Short courses generally do not require qualifications, but cost in the region of £300-£600.

 

The Royal College of Art

'Located in the heart of london, the Royal College of Art is the only wholly postgraduate university of art and desgin in the world'. Widely described as a crucible of the creative industries, courses are taught by internationally renowned artists, practitioners and theorists, divided over seven schools,  making it a modern and exciting environment to further a career in the arts. Through the College's extensive links with business, and an outstanding quality of graduates, from Tracey Emin to Julien McDonald, the RCA is seen as a destination for success.

Open Days: Open days take place around the November/ December period for entry the following year, with a chance to meet staff and students alike. Each department has up to two open days for optimum attendance.

Entry Requirements: Students are selected entirely on merit, with an initial assessment of portfolio, and later a formal interview. There are cross-college and individual department entrance requirements, details of which can be found on the website.

 

Nottingham Trent University

Nottingham Trent University is not only the nearest Fashion-focused university, but is also well-known for its inviting and inspiring atmosphere. With the location already taken care of as your city of choice for that all-important Undergraduate degree, it is the University's internationally established reputation as a centre of excellence for Postgraduate study in Fashion which makes it a sure-fire bet for consideration. From Art Direction and Fashion Business courses to communications and even Research degrees, Nottingham Trent's choice of studies makes for an exciting opportunity.

Open Days: A general open day takes place on the 17th of October, but is near fully-booked at this point. There are also two Postgraduate open evenings for the School of Art & Design on the 17th of March, and the 12th of May, available by booking through the University.

Entry Requirements: a minimum 2.2 honours degree in a relevant discipline, plus relevant experience are the main requirements, and a keen interest in the art and design industries is the key to acceptance - show your flair!

             

 

Edinburgh College of Art

'Edinburgh College of Art has an international reputation as one of the most successful independent art colleges in the UK'. Known for its creative influence and co-operative atmosphere, the College offers the highest quality of experience for students from a variety of backgrounds. From Animation to Fashion and Visual Culture, the college boasts a host of courses both at a Postgraduate and Research level.

Open Days: There is a general open day on the 30th of October, with talks, studio tours and the opportunity to talk to staff and students about the College and its range of courses. For other opportunities to visit, contact the College directly.

Entry Requirements: a minimum 2.2 honours degree, relevant specialism preferred, but applicants are considered on an individual basis. An introductory letter and a written proposal is later required.

 

Work Experience – Tips and Techniques

 ...when contacting...get in touch with the Fashion Editor/Executiive – someone of key importance to the organisation…

Ring ALL magazines/shops/companies – including your favourite ones; Announce yourself!

Follow up by sending your CV in the post, addressed to the relevant person; mark private and confidential, so the letter goes to the correct individual.

Wait for a period of 10 days, then telephone and ask about the progress of your enquiry.

Keep ringing, every 10 days; PERSIST, but in a professional manner.

...and once you’re in...

Make a friend in the office – someone you can keep in contact with, to ask about future experience/events.

Suss out the land – don’t take a portfolio of ideas unless asked; DON’T get ripped off!

The job could be simple in effect, with returns to PR’s, merchandising details and menial jobs all a possibility; it is ALL good for experience, and the recognition of a name!
